{"id":44186,"date":"2025-11-28T09:38:53","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T08:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dermoscent.com\/nos-conseils\/hyperkeratose-chez-le-chien-une-maladie-de-peau-a-surveiller\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T11:02:43","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T09:02:43","slug":"canine-hyperkeratosis-a-skin-disease-to-be-kept-under-close-watch","status":"publish","type":"nos-conseils","link":"https:\/\/dermoscent.com\/en\/our-advice\/canine-hyperkeratosis-a-skin-disease-to-be-kept-under-close-watch\/","title":{"rendered":"Canine hyperkeratosis: a skin disease to be kept under close watch"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"single-advice-intro\">\n<div class=\"single-advice-intro\">\n<p>Keratin is a protein, and the main component of hair, feathers, horns, claws, and beaks in most animals.<br \/>\n<strong>Canine hyperkeratosis<\/strong>\u00a0is a skin condition in which\u00a0<strong>excess keratin is produced<\/strong>, in particular in the nose and\/or paw pads; causing\u00a0<strong>skin thickening and hardening<\/strong>, sometimes to the point of\u00a0<strong>cracking<\/strong>, thus leading to the emergence of secondary infections.<br \/>\nIt is a progressive disease, which most often appears\u00a0<strong>gradually<\/strong>, and can be a\u00a0<strong>source of discomfort<\/strong>\u00a0for the dog.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"single-advice-content\">\n<div class=\"single-advice-inside-content\">\n<h2>What are the causes?<\/h2>\n<p>The causes of hyperkeratosis vary, the most common being:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hereditary and genetic<\/strong>: \u201cnaso-plantar keratoderma\u201d in the Dogue de Bordeaux and the Irish terrier, \u201cnasal parakeratosis\u201d in the Labrador\u2026 Generally, the condition can appear relatively early in life, between 4 and 9 months.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Certain diseases<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>parasites (leishmaniosis)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0infectious (canine distemper)<\/li>\n<li>auto-immune (pemphigus foliaceus)<\/li>\n<li>food: (zinc deficiency)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Age<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Age-related canine hyperkeratosis<\/strong>: the skin thickens with ageing, contrary to what happens in humans, especially at the pressure points, hence the formation of calluses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hyperkeratosis<\/strong>\u00a0of the paw pads\u00a0<strong>associated in older dogs with a chronic liver disease or pancreatic tumor<\/strong>\u00a0(hepatocutaneous syndrome)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"single-advice-inside-content\">\n<h2>What are the symptoms?<\/h2>\n<p>Hyperkeratosis lesions mainly affect the\u00a0<strong>nose<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>paw pads<\/strong>, more rarely other parts of the body (edge of the ears, skin of the stomach, friction areas, calluses, etc.). The nose can thicken, lose pigmentation, and sometimes develop crusts, giving it a\u00a0<strong>dry and rough appearance<\/strong>. The skin can in some cases crack, causing bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>The paw pads become thicker, rougher and sometimes harder. In some cases, the thickening may be quite dramatic. The local inflammation and very frequent cracking are painful for dogs and can cause limping.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"single-advice-inside-content\">\n<h2>How to manage the condition<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Local treatments<\/strong>\u00a0are first\u00a0<strong>needed in order to provide comfort and\/or improve appearance of the nose and paw pads.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Locally, specially-formulated\u00a0<strong>emollient ointments<\/strong>\u00a0will\u00a0<strong>soften the thickened cornea layer<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>promote the penetration of other active ingredients<\/strong>. These include\u00a0<strong>keratolytics<\/strong>\u00a0(which soften and\/or dissolve keratin) and<strong>\u00a0moisturizing, decongestioning substances<\/strong>\u00a0which will allow the skin to recover flexibility.
