UV-sensitive animals<\/h2>\n

\"WhiteDespite the protection provided by their coat, dogs and cats are sensitive to the action of ultraviolet (UV) rays, especially in\u00a0areas where there is little or no hair<\/strong>\u00a0(nose, outer ears, belly, flanks),\u00a0where the skin is finer or unpigmented<\/strong>. A\u00a0recent clipping<\/strong>\u00a0or the presence of\u00a0scarred areas<\/strong>\u00a0devoid of hair can also increase the sensitivity of animals to UV. Some skin conditions are also aggravated by exposure to the sun (pemphigus, lupus, etc.).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Effects of the sun<\/h2>\n

Prolonged exposure to the sun leads to visible skin damage more commonly known as \u201csunburn<\/strong>\u201d. Burning caused by UVA and UVB leads to\u00a0redness, dryness and flaking<\/strong>, and sometimes\u00a0blisters<\/strong>\u00a0that develop into\u00a0crusty lesions<\/strong>, accompanied by\u00a0itching<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, UVB and particularly UVA can cause skin cancers in the long term.<\/p>\n

If your pet gets sunburned, your vet will prescribe a soothing treatment based on an emollient hydrating cream.<\/p>\n

But nothing can beat prevention: in all cases,\u00a0exposure to the sun should be avoided<\/strong>\u00a0at the times of day when the rays are most dangerous\u00a0(between 12 and 4 pm)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A sun cream specifically designed for animals<\/strong>\u00a0should be applied to sensitive, hairless areas. The application should be repeated every 2 hours, and for dogs, after every swim. For at-risk animals, T-shirts are available.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sun products contain\u00a0two types of filters<\/strong>:\u00a0chemical filters<\/strong>, based on compounds that absorb UV rays, and\u00a0mineral screens<\/strong>, which diffract light and reflect UV rays like a mirror. These two types of filters are similarly efficient and long-lasting; however, chemical filters may cause intolerance or allergy, and are non-biodegradable..<\/p>\n

The\u00a0sun protection factor<\/strong>\u00a0(SPF) indicates the effectiveness of the sun protection. It is expressed as IP, FPS (French) or SPF. It has the same meaning in all countries (standardised tests). The higher the factor, the higher the percentage of UV rays blocked by the product.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

For both humans and animals,\u00a0prevention is the key factor<\/strong>\u00a0in limiting the harmful effects of the sun\u2019s rays.
