Even before summer is over we have to think about the new term, and returning to the routine of school or work. These changes can be seen in our pets too. With the arrival of fall, the seasonal molt can be expected\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fall\u2019s little problems<\/h2>\n

The return to school\/work is a\u00a0tricky period of transition<\/strong>\u00a0not just for pet-owners, but also for pets themselves. It often comes with a\u00a0change in routine<\/strong>: for animals whose owners work, it can mean long days indoors, in confined, heated surroundings and a few perfunctory walks. It is also the prelude to fall, with the\u00a0onset of colder weather<\/strong>, wind, rain, etc. Dogs and cats will shed their summer fur and get their winter coat; in some circumstances this\u00a0seasonal molting<\/strong>\u00a0can be excessive or last for an unusually long time.<\/p>\n

Not counting the potential appearance of concurrent problems that affect the skin or coat: dandruff, brittle claws, redness, itching, dull coat, etc. These problems can have many causes, and are not specific to the fall season. Contributing factors include\u00a0deficiencies<\/strong>, of either dietary or biological origin. The skin is an important organ that is constantly renewing itself, which consumes a large share of the nutrients provided in the diet. Any imbalance in the intake or assimilation of\u00a0amino acids<\/strong>,\u00a0essential fatty acids<\/strong>\u00a0(EFAs),\u00a0vitamins<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0trace elements<\/strong>\u00a0can disrupt the skin\u2019s functions as a barrier and in immune protection.<\/p>\n

Fall check-up<\/h2>\n

The post-holiday period is thus a good time\u00a0to check in with your vet<\/strong>\u00a0in order to detect any skin disorders or deficiencies, or simply discuss the best way of keeping your pet healthy. After a full clinical examination and a review of your pet\u2019s diet (possibly followed by blood and urine tests), the practitioner will prescribe\u00a0suitable foods<\/strong>\u00a0or adjust the ration. She\/he may also suggest a short course of\u00a0specific supplements given orally<\/strong>, with essential fatty acids, vitamins, trace elements, etc.<\/p>\n

There are also\u00a0other ways<\/strong>\u00a0of giving supplements,\u00a0particularly the topical application<\/strong>\u00a0of EFAs, i.e. applying them directly to the skin, where they are most needed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
