The animal shakes his\/her head, holds it at a tilt, scratches the base of his\/her ear, or moans when it is touched. Signs of inflammation in the ear, nose and throat (ENT) region or neurological problems may be observed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Otitis interna<\/strong>, which is rarer, affects the vestibular system or the auditory nerve, and can lead to deafness or disorders of balance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"single-advice-inside-content\">\n<h2>What are the main causes of otitis externa?<\/h2>\n<p>There are\u00a0<strong>4 main primary causes<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dermoscent.com\/accueil\/en\/nos-conseils\/spring-is-here-resurgence-in-allergic-dermatitis\/\"><strong>Allergies<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(atopy, food allergies)<\/li>\n<li>Parasites (\u201cear mites\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Foreign bodies (grass seeds)<\/li>\n<li>Excess earwax caused by a dysfunction of the natural cleaning of the ear canal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are\u00a0<strong>some predisposing factors<\/strong>, such as certain\u00a0<strong>anatomical features related to breed: numerous hairs in the ears<\/strong>\u00a0(Poodle, etc.),\u00a0<strong>hanging, poorly \u201cventilated\u201d ears<\/strong>\u00a0(Cocker Spaniel, Setter, lop rabbit, etc.),\u00a0<strong>narrow ear canal<\/strong>\u00a0(Shar-Pei, etc.), or\u00a0<strong>dogs with a tendency to suffer from atopy<\/strong>\u00a0(French Bulldog, Westie, etc.). In the event of recurrence, the lining of the canal tends to thicken (sometimes to the point of almost complete obstruction = stenosis), causing poorer ventilation, favouring the abnormal multiplication of organisms, creating a vicious circle.<\/p>\n<p>The later the condition is treated, the greater the risk of complications from otitis externa to otitis media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"single-advice-inside-content\">\n<h2>What is the treatment, and how to limit the risk of recurrence?<\/h2>\n<p>The management of otitis externa requires\u00a0<strong>local treatments<\/strong>, which involve both cleaning with a suitable product and a targeted treatment of the cause. In the event of recurrent otitis, the veterinarian may sometimes perform a thorough flushing or cleansing of the canal, in order to remove excess earwax and cellular debris. This will increase the efficacy of the treatment (antibiotic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, etc.), administered in accordance with the veterinarian\u2019s recommendation.
